If you’re reading this, thank you for being a loyal subscriber to Growth Hunt!
In 2022, I wanted to experiment with writing publicly. My thought was that I could try to find my voice, learn to write more consistently, and figure out if I could start a writing habit.
The good news is that I did that! But now that we’re into 2023, it’s time to take what I’ve learned and move things to the next level.
“Brett what does that mean? It sounds like you’re going to ask us to move in with you…”
Don’t worry, it’s nothing quite so serious. I’m just going to be taking this newsletter a bit more seriously. To that end, there are three things you should expect moving forward.
First, I’m rebranding. The new name of the newsletter is Up and to the Right.
There was a lot that went into thinking through this rebrand, and even the act of deciding to do it in the first place. I’m not going to get into all of that here, but if you’re interested in hearing more, let me know and I’ll happily get into it.
So why Up and to the Right? Well, the name is a play on two concepts.
First, there is a venture capital trope where investors don’t really care what you’re telling them about your startup as long as the chart in front of them is going “up and to the right”. At a certain point, to be successful at an early stage startup, you just need something that is moving up and to the right whether its users, revenue, engagement, etc.
Second is the myth of Sisyphus. Building a startup is often described as pushing a boulder up an endless hill.
I think it’s appropriate to imagine Sisyphus pushing that boulder up a user growth chart since that is essentially the startup journey.
Imagine this newsletter is like an extra set of hands pushing that boulder with you.
The second, and arguably more important shift starting today is the content.
I’ll still be writing the “growth hunt” style blogs that you’ve come to expect. In these I’ll be identifying key areas where real startups need to grow, and give them tactical advise on how to get there.
Those will be punctuated with smaller posts about marketing strategy, thoughts about startups, and breakdowns of early stage growth strategies from now-behemoth companies (think Google, Uber, Doordash, etc.).
What won’t change?
First, I’m going to continue trying to break down startups and marketing into dead simple terms and concepts that anyone can understand. Call me out if I use too much jargon.
Second - my excessive use of memes and gifs. Those will probably only increase in frequency so get out now if that isn’t your bag.
That variety leads me to the last change in expectations - consistency.
I’m going to commit to you, dear reader, to publish every single week on Wednesdays.
“Ok Brett, sure, I’ll believe it when I see it…”
Listen, I know. It’s been a minute since I’ve published anything, and even when I was publishing more regularly, I’m the first to admit it wasn’t exactly “consistent”. That said, there is no time like the present to make a change, and the new content that I'm going to be putting out should enable some more consistency given that much of it will be much shorter than before.
So after this post, expect to hear from “Up and to the Right” in your inbox instead of Growth Hunt every week.
Also, I just launched a more “permanent” website to go along with this newsletter. Check it out here.
Thank you in advance for your support, your feedback, and your referrals to other subscribers ;).
